Choosing Outfits for Your Brand Photoshoot:

What to Wear for a Brand Photoshoot…

Planning your next brand photoshoot and feeling stumped on what to wear? You're not alone! Choosing the right outfits can make a huge difference in how your brand is perceived. Here are my top tips to help you look and feel your best, ensuring your photos truly represent your brand.

Start with Comfort

I know, probably not what you were expecting me to lead with! But comfort is where we start. This means clothes that fit comfortably, shoes that don't rub, AND an outfit you feel yourself in. Any outfit has to pass this test before it’s worth adding to your list, because if you aren't comfortable, it’ll show!

Incorporate your brand colours

When considering what to wear for a brand photoshoot, start with your brand colours. These don't need to be exact hex colour matches! Just pieces that sit within your brand’s colour family. Pick a key colour and build your outfit around it.

Not got your brand colours decided yet? I suggest one of two routes:

Pick brand photoshoot outfits in neutral colours

These won't compete with the brand colours you choose to go for in the end, and they’ll look chic and lovely to boot. Think creams, browns, greys, blacks, navies.

Pick brand photoshoot outfits in your favourite colours

This is for my colourful kin that would never be seen dead in a neutral shade! If bright tones are your favourite colours, chances are high they will be reflected in your brand colours too. Stick with your natural preferences and go all-out with your favourite tones.

Bring a variety of Photoshoot outfits

For longer sessions, consider bringing something casual, semi-formal, and something a wee bit dressier. This variety will give you different looks to choose from and use for different purposes, whether social media posts, your website, or promotional materials. For shorter sessions, go for whichever outfit you want to meet a client in.

Having a range of outfits provides flexibility and ensures you have the perfect look for any context. Casual outfits are great for relatable, everyday posts, while dressier options can be used for more formal content. This variety helps keep your visual content fresh and engaging, appealing to different segments of your audience. I also suggest a mixture of short- and long-sleeved tops, so that you can transition a little from one season to the next.

Consider the location of your photoshoot

Your outfit should fit the theme and feel of the location of your shoot. If we’re in Edinburgh city and wandering around its streets, I would wear layers and choose a look that gels with your vision of the city. If you’re at a beach or park, a more relaxed, natural look might be better.

Think about how the colors and style of your clothing will interact with the backdrop. In an urban setting, sleek, contemporary clothing can highlight the city’s energy and modernity. Conversely, natural, flowing fabrics and earthy tones can beautifully complement a location surrounded by nature.

Limit distracting patterns

While patterns can add interest, in certain cases they can also be distracting. Stick to solid colours or subtle patterns to keep the focus on you, not your clothes. If you do choose a pattern, make sure it aligns with your brand’s aesthetic and isn’t too overwhelming. You are always welcome to send me photos if you are unsure!

Accessorise wisely

Accessories can add a personal touch to your outfit, but I recommend keeping them minimal and on-brand. A statement necklace or a stylish scarf can add flair without taking away from the overall look. I always say that less is more.

Accessories are a great way to inject personality into your photos. They can be conversation starters and add depth to your look, and create variety across your gallery. However, we want to strike a balance! This is why I suggest choosing pieces that enhance your outfit and align with your brand’s identity. Too many accessories can create visual clutter and distract from the main focus: you and your brand.

Lean on your brand photographer

Your brand photographer is a great resource for advice on what to wear for a brand photoshoot. We have a keen eye for what looks good on camera and can offer suggestions based on the session’s theme and location. Don’t hesitate to ask me for my input!

Photographers bring a wealth of experience and a fresh perspective to the table. We can provide valuable insights on how different fabrics, colours, and styles will appear on camera. Collaboration is key – by working together, you can ensure your outfit choices are perfectly suited to the vision of the photoshoot.

Final Brand Photoshoot Touches

If you were curious about having your hair styled or makeup done, I’ve got you! Your hair should be styled in a way that feels natural to you, and your makeup should be representative of your natural style. Don't feel you need to start wearing makeup if you never do normally. We’re only aiming for a look that’s an elevated version of your everyday style. That means there is no need to call in the professionals if you never would usually.

I like getting my nails done, but I almost never get my hair styled! If I do, I always want it dried curly, so for my brand photos I would never ask for my hair to be straightened. If you also like having your nails done, pick one of your brand colours, or go for something subtle, like a neutral or French. Again, if you never do this normally, please don't feel it’s essential!

There you go my loves!

Choosing the right outfits for your brand photoshoot doesn’t have to be daunting. By sticking to your brand colours, picking comfort, considering the location, and keeping things simple, you’ll be well on your way to feeling your very best during your session.

Lots of love,
